Traveling from Xining to Tongren / Rebkong via Shachung Monastery and meditation caves, then we continue to travel from Tongren to Xiahe and visIT Labrang Monastery.
Drive from Xining to Shachung Monastery, which is located on a mountaintop and has a great view of Yellow River in the opening valley. This is a hidden and less touristic place where you can enjoy some quite moment in a historic monastery. Afterwards, we descend to the valley and drive along beautiful scenic view of Yellow River. These places are some of the lowest areas by elevation in Qinghai Province. You will be driving through some muslim villages before taking the highway to Repkong. Repkong is home to three large Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and is famous across Tibet for its artists and strong cultural holder in the region. We drive to a Tibetan village in Rebkong where we have Tibetan homestay experience with warm welcome. The hosts will offer Tibetan style dinner in the evening. This is the time when you can exchange some interesting stories as well as get some first hand information about Tibetan village life.
Visit Tibetan traditional Artists village and one small monastery in the morning, The most well known villages and monasteries are Senggeshung Yago and Sanggeshung Mago (upper and lower Wutun), Gomar Gompa, Nyamtok village, etc.. If you are interested in learning Tibetan culture and Tibetan traditional arts, Afternoon visit Rongwo Gonchen. Rongwo Tosam Namgyel Ling or also called Rongwo Gonchen monastery is the principal monastery of Rebkong, The original temple was founded in 1301 by the Sakya master Samten Rinchen who was the eldest son of Dodebum, the ruler of Rebkong. Originally a Sakya monastery, it was converted to the Geluk tradition in 1630 by Shar Kelden Gyatso.
Head to Labrang via the famous Ganjia grassland. Labrang, Amdo’s most famous monastery, is located in the small town of Xiahe. Labrang sits at 2900m with high mountains and alpine forests surrounding it. Labrang is a popular pilgrimage destination for Tibetans and is home to over 1700 monks.
Visit Labrang Monastery in the morning and explore the Tibetan nomads town in the after noon. Make a Kora (circumambulation) around the Monastery and hike up to one of the mountain side to overview the holy Monastery. Afterwards driving back to Xining along the Grassland and Yellow river, ends the tour in Xining.
